Camila and João celebrated their wedding at Palácio da Igreja Velha, a historic venue in Vermoim, Vila Nova de Famalicão, in Northern Portugal.
Built in 1881, the palace combines historic architecture, two distinctive towers, a neo Gothic chapel, gardens and a contemporary event space. That contrast between heritage and modern design gives the venue a visual identity that feels immediately different from a traditional wedding estate.
From the beginning, Camila and João’s wedding had a relaxed and joyful energy. Quiet moments during the preparations gave way to an emotional ceremony, conversations between family and friends and a celebration that gradually became more spontaneous as the day unfolded.
For me, photographing a wedding at Palácio da Igreja Velha is particularly interesting because of the relationship between architecture and people. The strong lines of the building create opportunities for more intentional compositions, while the gardens and open spaces allow the photography to become softer and more documentary.
As a destination wedding photographer in Portugal, I never want the venue to become more important than the people inside it. Architecture, light and landscape can shape the visual language of a wedding, but the story still comes from gestures, relationships, emotion and everything that happens without being planned.
During Camila and João’s celebration, I moved between those two approaches naturally. Most of the day was photographed as it happened, observing reactions and moments between the people closest to them. When there was space for portraits, the character of Palácio da Igreja Velha allowed me to work more intentionally with geometry, perspective and light.
The result is a wedding story that combines documentary photography with an editorial sensibility, while remaining completely connected to the atmosphere of the day.
Camila and João’s wedding was elegant without feeling formal, emotional without becoming staged and full of the kind of spontaneous moments that make every celebration unique.
Palácio da Igreja Velha | History, Architecture and Weddings in Northern Portugal
Located in Vermoim, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Palácio da Igreja Velha is a nineteenth century property built in 1881. Its historic architecture includes two castle like towers and the Chapel of São Francisco de Assis, designed in a neo Gothic style, surrounded by gardens and green spaces. A contemporary events hall was later integrated into the property while preserving the character of the original buildings.
For wedding photography, this combination creates several distinct environments within the same celebration. Historic stone, architectural symmetry and the chapel offer a stronger and more structured visual language, while the gardens and outdoor spaces create room for softer portraits and spontaneous documentary moments.
That variety was an important part of Camila and João’s wedding. The location gave the photographs character, but the real story came from the people: the anticipation before the ceremony, the reactions between family and friends, the laughter, the movement and the energy that continued into the evening.
