Why are more Indian couples choosing destination weddings in Europe?

Indian weddings have always been about celebration, family and creating unforgettable memories. Over the past decade, couples have become much more global in their outlook, and many now see their wedding as an opportunity to bring loved ones together for a shared travel experience. Europe offers beautiful historic venues, stunning scenery and a sense of romance that really resonates with couples. It also allows them to create a slightly more intimate celebration while still maintaining the grandeur that Indian weddings are known for.

What makes Portugal, particularly Sintra and Lisbon, attractive for Indian weddings?

Portugal has a magical charm that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Sintra feels like something out of a fairytale, with its palaces, gardens and dramatic landscapes, which creates an incredible backdrop for wedding ceremonies. Lisbon brings together history, vibrant culture and beautiful architecture, along with coastal views and fantastic hospitality. For Indian weddings, which usually take place over several days, Portugal offers venues that allow couples to host colourful pre-wedding celebrations, elegant ceremonies and glamorous receptions all within stunning surroundings.

What are the biggest challenges couples face when planning an Indian wedding abroad?

The biggest challenge is usually logistics. Indian weddings are multi-day events with several ceremonies, each with its own traditions and requirements. There are also large guest lists, décor elements, specialised catering and cultural rituals to consider. When planning abroad, couples need to ensure that venues understand these requirements and that suppliers can deliver the scale and authenticity that Indian weddings require. This is where having an experienced planner who understands both the culture and the destination becomes incredibly important.

What advice would you give couples planning a multi-day Indian wedding in Portugal?

My biggest advice would be to think about the guest experience as much as the wedding itself. Destination weddings bring people together from different parts of the world, so creating a smooth itinerary across several days is key. Choose venues that are flexible and can host multiple events, ensure accommodation and transport are well organised, and allow time for guests to enjoy the destination itself. With the right planning, a destination wedding can feel like a beautiful celebration and holiday combined.

From a planner’s perspective, what makes a venue suitable for an Indian wedding?

Indian weddings require venues that are flexible and experienced in hosting large-scale celebrations. There needs to be enough space for different ceremonies, often both indoors and outdoors, and venues must be open to production elements such as elaborate décor, staging, lighting and sometimes fire rituals for Hindu ceremonies. It is also important that the venue team understands the cultural significance of the events and is willing to work closely with planners and suppliers to bring the couple’s vision to life.

What are the key cultural moments a photographer should always be prepared for during an Indian wedding?

Indian weddings are filled with meaningful moments, so photographers need to be ready for both the grand and the emotional scenes. The Baraat, where the groom arrives with music and dancing, is always full of energy. The bride’s entrance is another unforgettable moment, often filled with emotion. During the ceremony itself, moments like the exchange of garlands and the sacred fire rituals are deeply symbolic. And of course, the Vidaai, when the bride says goodbye to her family, is one of the most emotional moments of the entire wedding.
